Ami Thompson discovers she's pregnant after having a one-night stand at a party with a guy she doesn't remember. Too bad the father can't be her gorgeous, sexy OB/GYN--or maybe he is her dream come true.

Ami Thompson has never had much luck with the opposite sex. Men consider her an airhead because she has a fascination with weddings and bridal dolls. Ami has always blamed herself for being dateless, so she guesses getting pregnant after having a one-night stand with a stranger at a party just confirms her sense of poor judgment. Then she meets Doctor Dylan Ackerman. Now there is a guy she can get into. Not only does he have a face chiseled by the gods, but he also has a great body to go with it. And who wouldn't be proud to have a doctor in their family?

OB/GYN Dylan Ackerman has delivered hundreds of babies, but he never thought about having one of his own. Then too much alcohol and a one-night stand after a New Year's Eve party changes all that. Dylan wants to do the right thing and propose to the beautiful wedding arranger named Ami Thompson, even though she is a bit of a kook.

Ami Thompson opened her eyes. The ceiling above her didn't look familiar.

Someone snored next to her.

Ami lowered her gaze and turned her head slightly to the right. Broad white shoulders rose and fell as the guy slept. He had short dark-brown hair and an ear piercing. Ami tried to remember. A pain throbbed inside her head, her mouth felt as dry as the Sahara Desert, and her entire body ached.

Ami lifted the covers to peek. Yikes, totally nude. Okay, what happened is obvious, but who in the hell is this guy I've done it with? She recalled having been at Samantha and Lowell's party last night, but everything else was pretty much a blur. What time is it? Ami glanced over to the clock on the nightstand. Six am. I better get up.

Ami slid the covers off and eased out of the bed so she wouldn't wake the sleeping guy next to her. Their clothing lay scattered around the room. Something warm and wet ran down Ami's leg. Oh shit. Semen? We didn't use a condom. Her legs shook and her heart beat so hard in her chest that she thought she'd faint. She pounded her fist against her forehead. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Of all the asinine things to do--and she knew better. Ami hurried into the bathroom, emptied her bladder then showered. She found the guy still sleeping peacefully when she dressed. Ami located her shoes and purse then crept out of the room. I'm at a hotel. Ami nonchalantly walked past the housekeepers, pretending to be a guest.

"There's a complimentary breakfast being served downstairs," one of them said to her.

"Thank you." Ami knew she shouldn't be embarrassed, since the staff had probably seen their fair share of women and men trying to sneak out of the hotel after a night of unbridled passion. She rode the elevator down to the lobby where she ran into more people working or checking in or out. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee led her to the breakfast room. I might as well take advantage of it. Ami entered, retrieved a plate then filled it with grits, sausage, eggs, and fruit. She placed the plate on a table near the window then went back for the coffee and napkins. Ami sat down and glanced out of the window, spotting a very familiar sign. She was at the Poydras Hotel, not too far from where the party had taken place. The hotel was also close to the hospital where her best friend Samantha's husband Lowell worked as a pediatrician.

Ami ate her breakfast while she tried to figure out what she should do. For starters, she needed to get her ass to a drugstore for a morning-after pill, but the only pharmacy in the area didn't open until eight. Ami finished her food. The coffee wasn't exactly the best she'd tasted, but at least it was hot. She put the trash into the can then left the hotel. The sun had come up and a lot of traffic passed up and down the street.

Ami found her car in the parking lot. Who let my drunk ass get behind the wheel? She got in then drove home. She'd change then head to the pharmacy. It should be open by that time. The tears finally appeared. What if I'd gotten into a wreck? What if he has a disease? She promised herself that she wouldn't ever drink alcohol again.

The telephone rang before Ami could make it into her bedroom.

"Hello?" It was her adopted mother.

"Ami, I need you to come to the hospital. Your father just had a heart attack."

Ami forgot all about her dilemma and hauled ass out of the door again, still in her wrinkled party dress.

The alarm sounded and Dylan Ackerman reached over to shut it off. He rolled over on his back then sat up quickly. She's gone. He'd come to the hotel around one in the morning with a young woman he'd met at a party given by Doctor Lowell Jones, one of the pediatricians at the hospital where he worked. He knew very little about the beautiful black woman except her first name--Ami. She'd been drinking, and Dylan couldn't get her address out of her. He'd just driven her in her car to the hotel that most of the doctors used when they were in between calls, with the intent of them both sleeping off the alcohol they had consumed. But he'd gotten the surprise of his life when the young woman put on some music and began dancing erotically for him. The next thing he'd known they were kissing like a couple of randy teens. Ami was just his type, with a sexy body, full breasts, and wide hips. She'd had him out of his clothes and so turned on that he couldn't think straight. It hadn't helped that he had several drinks under his belt too. So unprofessional. But after working a month of sixteen-hour shifts, Dylan had felt he needed a break. He hadn't realized just how drunk he was until Ami had pushed him down, mounted him, and rode him like a horse. Not that he'd complained, but he liked to take the lead and not just be on the receiving end.

Dylan got off of the bed. His clothes were still on the floor where Ami had tossed them. He felt for his wallet. It was still in the back pocket of his pants, along with his money, credit cards, and keys.

The bathroom still felt pretty warm when he entered. Ami had showered before leaving. He figured she'd wake up screaming, once she learned they'd had sex without a rubber. He had recently gotten a clean bill of health from his yearly physical, and she had been a virgin. Shocking. He showered, dressed, then left the hotel without eating a breakfast. He had to get to the hospital, because he would be on call for the next twenty-four hours.
