Betrayed by his wife and sold into slavery, Race Trevern and his son desperately need a miracle. Enter Alaina Stratten, a woman with the power to break through the chains around Race's heart and help him trust again.

Alaina Stratten's dream of purchasing a rare cloth to take home falls flat once she sets eyes on a man and child in shackles. His gaze compels her to step up and do something. Before she knows it, she's the new owner of the slave pair.

Betrayed by his wife and sold into slavery, Race Trevern desperately needs the break Alaina offers. Not about to waste their chance, Race quickly gains the advantage, vowing to give the woman a taste of captivity by making her his slave, his wife's treachery still a bitter aftertaste.

The past haunts Race, forcing his hand and threatening the precarious freedom he and his son recently gained. He needs assistance and the only one who can change the tide is locked in his dungeon. Race has no choice but to trust Alaina and hope her promises hold true. She holds their lives in her hands.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The clang of the outside door opening and shutting pulled Race Trevern from his seat on a withered, broken down bench. Hope soared as he spotted his wife, Mariah, enter the walking area in front of his chilly, bar encased cell. "Thank the goddess. Mariah." He leaped to the front of the small enclosure and grasped onto the metal rails.

Earlier in the day, he'd been singled out from training, placed in wrist cuffs, and dragged off to prison with no other excuse than they had a summons for his arrest. Confused and angry, he insisted the guard notify his wife. She held a high political place and would pull stings in order to first release him before assisting him to determine what the crackfire went wrong.

She inclined her head toward the guard, waited for him to leave, then faced him with a haughty expression on her beautiful face. "I see they found you."

Not the greeting he expected. Perplexed, he studied her face, catching a hint of happy victory in her gaze.

What in the three moons is going on?

"They? Why am I here? Aren't you here to get me released?"

She paced a few steps before coming to a halt. "Released?" A snicker followed. "Why would I do such a thing? I've worked way too long and hard to get you in just this place."

A sickening feeling washed over him. Nearly a day ago, he'd caught her in a lie. Discovered she'd been spending more time with another man than was seemly. On impulse, he checked their savings, only to discover everything had been transferred to her name. Before he could track her down and inquire about the change in account status, he found himself locked up.

"I don't understand." He leashed his building anger, needing answers.

She trailed her fingers across her ample bosom. One of her finest attractions and a focus of his loving many times in the past few year cycles. Her physical perfection had no rival, at least in his eyes. He'd thought her heart just as wonderful. Until recently. Now, he feared he looked evil in the eye.

"You've served your purpose. It's time to move on."

Divorce wasn't an option in his world. At least in the upper echelon houses. Marriage ended with the death of a spouse. Period. "What purpose?" He gritted his teeth and clamped down so hard on the bars that his knuckles whitened.

"Why, your family name. It gave credibility to me. Instant respectability. Along with the bonus of a tidy sum from your family treasures." She peered up at him from under her long, black lashes. "While you've been off gallivanting as a soldier, I've made some new friends. Ones that will help me take the throne. With you out of the way, I shall be free to pursue my ambitions."

He shook his head. Had she lost her mind? "One dictator doesn't rule. You know that. The court does."

"For now," she said, her voice a low purr. "I intend to change that."

His gut sank. "How?"

She waved her hand dismissively. "Nothing you need to know. What you should be asking is what your fate happens to be."

"Fine. I'll play along. What's my fate?"

A simper smile crossed her full lips. "A lifetime of slavery."

His mouth dropped open. "That's illegal on Nemenda."

"Who said anything about being a slave on Nemenda?"

"You can't be serious."

Her eyes narrowed. "Oh, I'm serious all right. Deadly serious."

The rustle of chains rang loudly across the stone-lined chamber.

Race held his breath, knowing this latest development would be even worse than what he'd already learned. One glimpse at the newcomer and outright fury flew to the fore.

"What have you done to our son?"

Teegan, the dark-haired youth of only six year cycles stumbled into view, his wrists and ankles shackled together, allowing him only enough slack to shuffle along. He glanced up at Race with a healthy dose of fear painted on his face.

The jailer kept a hand on Teegan's shoulder, holding him still and facing Race.

"Nothing yet."

Race glared at her. "Release him. If you don't want him, take him to my family. They will care for him."

She laughed. "I think not. Although, you are correct on one count. I never wanted the little slime worm from the moment of his conception. An heir to compete for my throne. Absolutely not. His presence complicates matters for me. Thus, he must be eliminated."

"No!" Race rattled the bars, frustrated when they held solid. "I'll do anything, just spare him." He hated to beg, but Teegan's life meant more than his own. He loved his son, would gladly lay down his life for him. Helpless, with nothing left to barter, he could only beg the woman he'd once foolishly trusted and loved.

Looking back with newfound knowledge, he saw the hints, the manipulations. The way she duped him with her expert wiles. He thought she loved him just as deep. Now, he realized it had all been an illusion on his part. He'd been taken advantage of by one of the best. He'd given his heart to the embodiment of evil.

And his son would pay the price.

Rage added to the burning cauldron in his stomach. If only she moved closer, within reach, he'd wrap his hands around her neck and squeeze. He wanted to watch the last breath leave her body; send her to an eternity in hell. Anything to protect Teegan and gain his freedom.

"Anything?" She arched an eyebrow.

He peered down at Teegan and swallowed his pride. "Anything."

She tapped her lips for a second before shaking her head. "I'm afraid you have nothing left that I want. I've already taken everything you had. Too bad you didn't turn out better. Oh, well. I already have a replacement lined up. The poor mourning widow will need comfort from someone, you know."

"Why now? After all these year cycles?"

"Things are finally in place. A few details left to tidy up and my plan will roll into action."

He saw her truly for the first time. Bile rose in his throat. "Did you ever love me?"

She grinned wickedly. "Love? Of course that's what you believed. I did my best to invoke such feelings. After all, I needed you for this segment of my plan." She paused a second before tilting her head as if in thought. "Love. A token emotion, really. Although it did serve its purpose well. You fell into my hands like a ripe cottonflower. Malleable. Gullible. And, oh so dedicated to my overall happiness. A fine trait and hard to find in this date. Men are so self-centered these days, caring of their own wishes and pleasures. Too bad you no longer have a place in my life. Alas, you know too much and are dispensable. In truth, you were a mere stepping stone on my journey. One who has outlasted his usefulness." Striding backwards, she motioned for a few more guards. "Chain him up. We mustn't be late with our appointment with the slave trader."

"Daddy!" Teegan squirmed as he began to panic. He struggled against the strong hold of the first guard, earning a harsh shake for his freedom bid.

Frantically, Race wracked his mind for ideas, coming up empty handed. "What will you do with him?" He demanded between clenched teeth. I have to get to Teegan. Save him.

"He can share your fate." She stepped back as three burly guards approached his cell. "There's plenty of buyers who crave youth for their atypical amusements."

Trepidation like he'd never known gave him strength. The cell door opened. Race lunged forward but a swinging bully club knocked him to his knees. He grabbed his stinging arm, kicked at the nearest guard, and managed to throw a punch before they ganged up on him and threw him to the floor, facedown. He wiggled and struggled, all to no avail. No amount of fight would remove the men from his back. As two of them held him unmoving, the third snapped on matching shackles. The heavy metal bit into his flesh in their snugness. He managed to glare up at Mariah and spit at her shoes. "I'll kill you for this."

"Wishful thinking."

A fist popped him hard in the temple. Blackness quickly followed.

About Cheyenne Meadows:
Fireborn Publishing Main Page

Growing up in the Midwest, I began reading romance novels in high school, immediately falling in love with the genre, to the point where I decided to write professionally for a career. However, that dream splattered against a brick wall, resulting in a quick death in my first writing class in college when my professor told me bluntly that I wasn't any good at it. I shifted gears quickly, and left my writing dreams behind, eventually settling on becoming a nurse.

A few years back, I stumbled across a fan-fiction writing site on a favorite author's webpage. I began to read stories others wrote, not only making some wonderful close friends from the experience, but also, really learning to write for the very first time. Here I was able to share short stories, practice my writing skills, and truly develop into a writer. More than that, the experience allowed me to revitalize my dream, as I rediscovered joy in writing. Now, I spend my days off with my alpha male characters, quick witted heroines, and see how much trouble everyone can get into.

When I'm not working or writing, I enjoy working in the garden, canning, and seeing my backyard as a living canvas for my whimsical landscaping, and, of course, reading romance novels.
